Colonial
Maneuvers is a short fan film inspired by the iconic Alien
franchise. Our non‑commercial project seeks to test the
boundaries of low‑to‑no‑budget filmmaking by building a
full indie pipeline around virtual production, practical
effects, and modern AI tools. We combine green screen
performance capture, rear projection and projection
mapping for in‑camera atmospherics, Blender‑based CG and
compositing, and AI‑assisted video generation in local
workflows like ComfyUI to create ambitious sci‑fi visuals
on indie resources. All of this converges in a traditional
final compositing and editing stage, where live‑action
plates, CG renders, and AI passes are assembled into a
cohesive short film, graded, and mixed for online release.
In
addition to exploring new techniques in film production,
the project pays heartfelt tribute to the beloved Alien
franchise. With a profound respect for its impact on both
cinema and video games, we’re crafting a distinctive
experience that combines genuine fan appreciation with a
desire to push the creative boundaries of indie
innovation. As part of that goal, we’ll share our full
workflow—green screen setup, projection workflows, Blender
scene construction and compositing, AI‑driven enhancement,
and editorial finishing, alongside the short film in a
compilation of lessons learned throughout production.
Colonial
Maneuvers is actively seeking talented volunteers to join
its creative team. If you're an aspiring actor, VFX
artist, compositor, or AI‑curious filmmaker, this is an
opportunity to contribute to a compelling fan project and
experiment with cutting‑edge indie workflows.
